Silvanidae
10 genera, 12 species. 2.3-7mm. Antennae inserted laterally at front of head, 11 jointed and variable; long and slender (Uleiota), apically thickened (Nausibius) or clubbed (Oryzaephilus). Thorax quadrate or elongate with front angles produced (Silvanus) or having sides dentate (Nausibius, Oryzaephilus). Elytra entire, elongate and parallel sided, usually depressed and often strongly striate or ridged and or punctured. Without stutellary striae. Anterior coxae small, tarsi 5-5-5 with segment 4 smallest and with at least some segments bilobed. In shape they are elongate and more or less depressed beetles, usually somberly coloured.
From the literature none of the species seems to be common. They are found either under bark, Uleiota, Dendrophagus or Silvanus, among vegetable refuse, Psammoecus or among stored foodstuffs, Cathartus, Oryzoephilus spp.
Cryptamorpha and Cathartus are recorded as regularly introduced in stored products. Nausibius, Ahasverus and Oryzaephilus spp. are established UK species from imported foodstuffs.
