Amara communis/convexior | |
The general shape and appearance of the genus Amara will soon become familiar to
even the most novice coleopterist especially as some species (eg plebeja, aenea)
are common and will soon be found in the wild; running on lawns etc on sunny days or in
pitfall traps.
In typical specimens separation of A.communis and A.convexior is relatively easily by examination of the row of pores on the elytral margin. In communis there is a clear gap in the row at about the middle, in A.convexior, although the spacing of the pores may be wider, there is no clear gap. Care should be taken to check both sides of the elytra as in some specimens of A.communis there may be an isolated single puncture in the gap on one side. If in doubt the aedeagus is a good confirmation, the apex being longer and thinner in A.convexior. |
