Apteropeda globosa/orbiculata
The enlarged femora, lack of pronotal impressed lines or foveae and the pronotum strongly narrowed anteriorly and convex elytra strongly rounded laterally separate the 3 species of Apteropeda on the British list, A.splendida Allard was last recorded from the Ashdown forest in 1931 (Cox) and in Hyman and Parsons has the status of endangered although it should probably be regarded as extinct in the Brtish Isles. The remaining two species can be reasonably easily separated by the comparative length of the 4th and 5th antennal segments; in the rarer A.globosa (Illiger) (notable B- Hyman and Parsons) segment 5 is longer than the 4th, in A.orbiculata (Marsham) both segments are about the same length. Unfortunately Joy has this the wrong way round. There are other differences but they are quite comparative and we have had difficulty picturing them successfully so when attempting to identify single specimens without comparative material it is best to rely on the antennal segments. For completeness however:

A.globosa
Less metallic, with a green or sometimes bluish reflection, pronotal punturation more diffuse, Interstices less obviously punctured. Larger.

A.orbiculata
More metallic, generally with a bronze reflection but sometimes green, blue or violet, pronotum more densely puntured and elytral interstices clearly punctured. Smaller.
