Elaphrus
There are four British species all of the same general and very charactistic appearance and so distinct from all other British carabids. All are found near water. Our species are separated thus:

2 (1) Elytra dull, sculpture smooth. Prosternum pubescent. Metallic elytral fovea sparsely punctate

Restricted to Scottish highlands, in wet moss by mountain springs.
lapponicus Gyllenhal

- Elytra shining, sculpture rough. Prosternum glabrous (the prosternal process may have scattered long setae). Metallic elytral fovea densely punctate

Very local, scattered records. Mostly s.w.England and Wales
